The Journey of a Couturier: Weaving Heritage into Modern Wearable Art

The Bespoke Origin

It all began in the world of "Bespoke" where every stitch is dedicated to the unique silhouette and story of each individual, illuminating brilliant moments in their lives.

For many years, I crafted one-of-a-kind couture gowns in my private atelier. The years spent in relentless pursuit of beauty now serve as the unwavering foundation for the quality of KEIKO TAGAI.

"Quiet Indignation"

Those peaceful days came to an end when I happened upon an article in a library detailing the decline of the kimono industry.

As I read, an intense impulse struck me, followed by a sense of "quiet indignation." I saw a towering wall standing between the craftsmen who create kimonos and the people of the modern world. Despite a mutual yearning for connection, the exclusivity of tradition, shapes disconnected from modern life, and the high barrier of dressing (kitsuke) had severed this precious bond. Treasures that should be cherished were left dormant, unable to find their place in contemporary lifestyles.

Overwhelmed by this reality, I felt a deep resentment not only toward my own ignorance of kimono as a Japanese person but also toward Japanese society that was simply watching these national treasures fade away.

"I just had to break down this wall and reconnect the two."

From that day, I immersed myself in the history, patterns, and traditional craftsmanship of kimono, learning from seasoned craftsmen. The more I discovered, the more I realized that Japan holds rare, incomparable beauties that are impossible to replicate today. The conviction that this beauty must not end as a relic of the past changed my destiny.

It was the beginning of a new challenge to bring this 'treasure' back into the daily lives of people around the world.

Defying Limits, Shaping Art

How could the aesthetics of traditional kimono be woven into modern daily life and shared with the world?

I spent years researching global markets, analyzing how the world might embrace a new way of experiencing kimono. I wrote down and tested hundreds of ideas, chasing something entirely new that did not yet exist. The answer I finally reached was the sculptural "Hat."

Initially, when I brought this vision to hat manufacturers and factories, I was met with rejection. "Blocked hats cannot be made from kimono fabric," they said. Voices around me were dismissive, saying, "Who would wear such a hat?" or "It’s impossible to challenge the world."
However, I turned that frustration into fuel. Instead of giving up, I resolved to prove the "impossible" with my own hands.

Despite my career as a bespoke couturier, entering the world of millinery meant starting from absolute zero—initially, I didn’t even know the names of the tools or materials.

My goal was to preserve the craftsmen's dedication and the delicate patterns of the kimono, honoring traditional techniques as much as possible. I sought to recreate the epic stories painted onto the silk—as if each kimono were a masterpiece—onto the small canvas of a hat. To transform the "living art" of the kimono into a piece that colors the daily lives of people around the world, I endured countless years of solitary, endless trial and error.

The spirit of Wasai (traditional Japanese tailoring), the precision of couture, and the original millinery techniques I spent years perfecting have finally melted into one. The resulting "KIMONO HAT" is a "crystal of challenge," carved out by staking my entire life on this vision.
