It is made from a single kimono (Oshima-Tsumugi).
Oshima-Tsumugi, one of the world's top 3 textiles (woven fabrics), is a traditional Japanese fabric produced mainly on Amami Oshima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture, and is characterized by its dyeing process using natural mud.
In ancient times, when the Edo Shogunate imposed a ban on kimono, the islanders hid their beloved kimono in the mud fields, where they were dyed beautifully, and this is said to be the origin of mud dyeing.
